9/15/2019 Frederick Noad Classical Guitar Method
Frederick Noad. Frederick McNeill Noad (August 8, 1929 – September 13, 2001) was a classical guitar performer, educator, and a founder of the Guitar Foundation of America. Noad was best known for his popular instructional television series, Guitar with Frederick Noad, which was originally televised on PBS in the mid-1960s. Since its first printing in 1968, Frederick Noad's Solo Guitar Playing has been used by countless students and teachers of classical guitar. The fourth edition features revised and updated exercises and an expanded selection of solo guitar repertoire gleaned from the best-selling Frederick Noad Guitar.
Chrythes wrote:Pumping Nylon or Solo Guitar Playing by Noad? You want Solo Guitar Playing 1. And a teacher - it can be used without a teacher, but it's better with (I've used it as a teacher, and have recommended it to teacher-less learners for years as well). It just happens that I have recently bought Solo GP 2 and Pumping Nylon together, on a whim. They cover similar ground in different ways (annoyingly, in my case, both have the Giuliani RH studies, for example).
And, evidently, Solo GP 2 comes after Book 1, so you don't need that yet, and according to its back-cover blurb, Pumping Nylon is a series put out by something called 'The National Guitar Workshop', about which I know nothing, but the point I want to make is that a workshop is normally something you attend in order to improve, not to learn from the beginning. Once you get to that level (intermediate, or even higher), I'd say Pumping Nylon is more up-to-date and relevant than Solo GP 2, especially if what you are looking for is some serious work-out exercises to build solid or even impressive technique.
But I wouldn't dismiss the other book altogether, either, it's got a tasty selection of pieces and tons of useful stuff on, e.g., ornaments that you won't find in Pumping Nylon. So, when it comes down to it, there's no such thing as too many music books. Thanks for your advice. I actually got a copy of Solo Guitar Playing 1 today and it seems that it's really what i was looking for as a beginner compared to Pumping Nylon with which i was struggling until now. It has more pieces that suit my level which makes it a lot more interesting and enjoyable to learn from. But still - i think i'll try combining those two - one will be like a guideline for classical guitar and the other one will be a guideline for technique.
Well, gotta get back to studying! Hans W wrote: All I can say is that after umpteen other 'lesson' books, I finally learned how to play CG when I ran across Noad's 1 and 2 books. I'm self-taught from those books and after finishing book 2, I never looked at another lesson book. If after you go through book 2 and can play Tarrega's RDLA which is at the end of book 2, then I think you can do what I did and just select pieces you'd like to play.
I would be interested in how long it look you (and approx how many hours each day you practiced) to finishing working through Noad Book 1 and 2 and to be able to play the last piece (RDLA) fairly well. I am also following this route. After 4.5 years I am nearing the end of Book 1 and the last piece for me to tackle is El Tastament d'Amelita (the last piece in book 1), although I have also been supplementing my practice with various other pieces such as the grade pieces from the Trinity Grade books. I guess I'm not the right person to ask about how long it took me to 'get' through Noad 1 and 2. Once I could play and read scores which I learned from Noad, I went on my own. Which is to say I started RCDA after one year and Leyenda a few months later.
These were pieces I wanted to play so once I had the ability to read the notes and do the barres, I just went ahead and did them. I didn't go through ever lesson meticulously, as I should have, so my experience is very different than yours. Keep on with what you're doing.
You want to learn how to be play CG whereas I wanted to play very advanced pieces quickly. In retrospect your method is better.
